She wore a dress that reminded me That she was naked underneath I’d been studying restroom sign diagrams That did no justice Our heads are circles We have rectangular torsos But where I have blocks for trousers You have a feminine triangle I got past staring at your dress By closing my eyes, at first Friends or lovers- my rushing blood Knows no difference, but I can tell Our heads are circles We have rectangular torsos But where I have blocks for trousers You have a feminine triangle She wore a dress like a sock on a hot dog I watched her with relish We talked in earnest about the differences Between men and women, but I forgot Our heads are circles We have rectangular torsos But where I have blocks for trousers You have a feminine triangle

There’s a bat against an indigo sky Wheeling and darting to catch a fly There’s a light on in the apartment Across the street There’s no light on, out here on my porch There’s a party next door with a bug torch Everybody wheeling and darting To catch an eye I’d like to laugh like a flystrip There’s a star near a constellation Above the trees, making conversation Like all the gnats on the Zachs in their hats Out back I smell sweetly burning wax So I’ll stay home and sharpen my ax Splitting hairs is clever work And it makes me grin But I’d like to laugh like a flystrip There’s a light on across the street Glowing seductively at me I start to rise, then I’m paralyzed By the skies Flowers bloom across the sky A garden party for the fourth of July Everyone looks up and raises their cups And takes a sip And I’m laughing at the flystrip And I’m laughing on the flystrip

I trip on matches I stumble blind I practice hat tricks But they aren’t mine But they’re good I want some magic Some colored time It seems so tragic My sorrows rhyme Is that good? You love another Well that’s just fine A cloud’s tears are covered When it’s you who’s flying Above But I’m lying down here below And I’m looking up at the water falling Above Through the prisms I see you You have your hands in my hair I know you hate me to see you When you’re up there And I’m below A box of matches Beneath your fears I’m here, I catches Your falling tears

Wet the glass and salt the edges Use the special kind Cut the citrus into wedges Bittersweet with lime Ooo Mock the way I hold my glasses Slip your hand in mine Talk about how our time passes Bittersweet with lime Ooo To say goodbye like this, you know It tastes the same as our hello Your tequila in my blender For the final time Mixing drinks for one last bender Bittersweet with lime Ooo

Yours Asleep 04:02
You were there And you, too And you and you and you I should write ‘Cos I care I recognized your hair I caught a note of yours asleep Swear I’ll answer in a week We never met But we talked a lot I liked you by default I knew you as well As I knew anyone I don’t know if I know anyone I don’t know if I know anyone I caught a note of yours asleep Swear I’ll answer in a week

Oh, don’t write It’s too soon To say anything for sure Oh, I’m right I know for sure I can feel my heart, I can feel the moon My hair in the tide Oh, don’t sigh It’s not June Still I’m green, wanton, true Oh my Western isles I kick to them and I pull to you My hair in the tide So there are islands, I can see Kisses blowing, wind, sun, trees But there are islands under me And dinosaurs beneath my feet They’re in the tide Oh, don’t sigh It’s still June There’s time to dive and visit dry lands, too Oh my Westing eyes I kick to them and I pull to you My hair in the tide

The vampire’s moved in now Night after night I can tell your morning cereal’s lost a Little of its bite I can hear him at the front door, leaving Early morning, `round three Don’t you think I know why you’re losing Interest in me? I think I lost my place Long before I’d admit Seems I’ve seen his face before in the mirror The days are feeling short now Losing time, I race Can’t find the time or the will to Pick up the pace But now and then I catch you again and we Trade dirty jokes Tossing back and forth the hot potato of who Cares the most I think I lost my place Long before I’d admit Seems I’ve seen his face before in the mirror Long ago, when I saw you standing with him I almost cried You whispered in my ear, “I’m on your side” The vampire’s moved out now And with him, you’ll go Did it turn out the best for us both? I guess we’ll never know But late at night, when I hear the trains movin’ On out of town Hear `em talking and a-whistling, sayin’ “Time to get down” I think he lost his face But at least it’s getting clearer Livin’ fast so long, it all seemed blurred Now and then, I forget you again and Wonder how we’re doin’ Each new yesterday seems like tomorrow Seems like today

Bus benches moist, have you lost my voice? I know you from when we both talked to friends Somehow I doubt you’d know us If we met again Last couple years have gone so easily, tears Fall when I wake up to the tv breakup But the bus for us has come Change to shake up I’ll sit behind, you can read my mind If you want to know just how it’s going When I say goodbye, you won’t know Old friend of a friend, it’s not the end Of what we had that makes me sad But what might have been By the way, my name’s Tad

The last time, you slapped my face in mid-embrace And you walked me to the door Then you kissed me just in case You’d forget the taste And you thought you might want more Snow on the ground I’ve been slow coming `round And you’ve already made up your mind Snow on the ground I’ve been slow coming `round And you say “Go away,” but take your time The last time I woke up late You’d left at eight And your letter hit me like a punch Sat there trying to relate Then you were at the gate Home, whistling “Love, Not Lunch” Snow on the ground I’ve been slow coming `round And you’ve already made up your mind Snow on the ground I’ve been slow coming `round When you say “Go away,” but take your time I would say “Let’s stay in” But we’ve already worn it down so thin On my way out, your way in We’ve got to wait for more Wait for more x 5 Snow, to begin The last time we said goodbye I wondered why Pulled on my boots and followed Grabbed your arm, just outside Said “I can’t decide I mean look, it’s starting to blow” Snow on the ground I’ve been slow coming `round And you’ve already made up your mind Snow on the ground I know how this must sound But I’m okay Go away, just take your time

about

"Yours Asleep" was the product of over a year of work, starting at the end of my senior year of college, and was my first experience putting together a full-length album.

The production here is some of the poppiest I've ever put together, with dense, interlocking melodic parts in the instruments and vocals. There are a lot of ballads, and a couple of really punchy rockers.

I think it was in response to the amount of time and effort I put in on this record that I swung a little folkier on the more stripped down follow-up, "Solitaire For Two," before returning to fuller production on my third record, "Play To Remember."
