about

I recorded this record at home in between months of touring in 2004 and 2005. Acoustic sounds meet crunchy electro drum machine beats meet real live band songs. Lyrically, the record covers ground ranging from roadtrips to roadkill, freezing winters of love and melted soap on the kitchen floor of said love, de la la la. Enjoy!

Track Name: Driving To Georgetown
Driving to Georgetown I was drinking cold coffee
And eating donut crumbs nervously off my lap
Driving to Georgetown there were cows on the road in Virginia
I pushed in my cigarette lighter and slowed down

I honked my horn and parted the Jersey sea
My cigarette lighter popped out on my knee
I screamed and swerved and hit a cow
Knocked it down and kept driving

Oh I can’t see why you’d want me
But I’ll believe eventually

Driving to Georgetown I was listening to a mixtape you made me
On auto reverse for four hours
And the drunken conversation and incriminating remarks
Recorded between the songs kept me company

Driving to Georgetown I could barely maintain my conversation with you
Over the music
But I was determined – and highly caffeinated
It was a good conversation
You weren’t there

Oh I can’t see why you’d want me
But I’ll believe eventually

Driving to Georgetown I thought of you with every biker couple I passed
Necking on the highway
Driving to Georgetown I was naked for the entire state of South Carolina
And I thought of you

Driving to Georgetown – I didn’t know why
I didn’t have your number
Driving to Georgetown I decided
If you wanted me, I’d let you

Oh I can’t see why you’d want me
But I’ll believe ‘cause it’s all I need
Track Name: Running After You
Running after you exhausts me
I wish you would just turn around
With every step I take, I lose more ground
'Cause you're running at the speed of sound

Any other time I listen
My friends they have so much to say
But when you come around, they run away
So I'm running after you today

Wherever you are going to
I'll be right behind
And if I'm meant to take a hint
I hope that you won't mind

'Cause running after you've forgotten
Is never quite the same, you see
And if it's the same to you, I'd rather be
Running after you than free

I'd rather be running after you than free
Track Name: Nothing Sexy
I like a pair of tight jeans early in the morning
Walking or biking their way to work
It relieves me of the need to drink black coffee
At six a.m. that’s a perque

And give me a smile with that beer at 7:30 p.m.
I need your kindness more than this Pabst
‘Cause something’s been weighing me down
But you make me feel so light
Just be your sexy self, that’s all I ask

‘Cause all this wasted time, all this doubt
There’s nothing sexy, nothing sexy about it
All these days when the sun seemed clouded
There’s nothing sexy, nothing sexy about it

I see a glamorous face in the impulse aisle
At the grocery store I love to check out
And it doesn’t bother me that I’ll never know her
There’s simple joy in a magazine pout

And when I’m driving home with my produce and my cans
I’ll remember the words printed beside
“Ten Guaranteed Ways To Satisfy Your Man!”
And I’ll wonder if there’s anything I haven’t tried

‘Cause all this wasted time, all this doubt
There’s nothing sexy, nothing sexy about it
All these days when the sun seemed clouded
There’s nothing sexy, nothing sexy about it

You’ve got a certain look, I pretend not to notice
With your arms above your head
I just walk on by and put away my groceries
Then I lie down on the bed

“And where have you been? I would like to know,” you say
I reply “It’s been a long day”
But I’m not tired, no I’m just now waking up
Just keep on looking at me that way

‘Cause all this wasted time, all this doubt
There’s nothing sexy, nothing sexy about it
All these days when the sun seemed clouded
There’s nothing sexy, nothing sexy about it

And all the senseless things that I’ve shouted
There’s nothing sexy, nothing sexy about it
And all the emptiness in a room this crowded
There’s nothing sexy, nothing sexy about it
Track Name: Doing Your Dishes
I’m doing your dishes while you’re not at home
Doing your dishes while you’re not at home
I used too much soap
Now I’m cleaning up foam

I’m cleaning your closet and looking for a mop
Cleaning your closet and looking for a mop
I’m browsing through the bubbles
Gonna clean up every drop

De la la la

I’m picking up papers and managing my mess
Picking up papers and managing my mess
I’m wiping up a spill that stained your dress

I’m taking out the trash while you’re pulling up
Taking out the trash while you’re pulling up
You hold in your hand a used coffee cup

De la la la
Track Name: An Actor Prepares
She goes off to work in offices
I drive her there
She is inside daytimes sometimes tired
But she cares too much
To call when she escapes
It’s always late when I see her offstage

She is taking care of going places
Like she should
I’m just trying on the clothes she leaves me
Wish I could
Just be myself in one of these plays
She says she misses me when she’s onstage

She is leaving Sunday for a while
I’ll be fine
I’ll write and she’ll answer
When I call her every time
We’re sad, but we can almost kiss
We have gotten lucky with postage
Track Name: Cool With It
Are you cool with it
I got to know
Are you cool with it
‘Cause if so

If so, we’ve got to go

Are you cool with it
Tell me now
Are you cool with it
‘Cause I’m about

I’m about to lose all doubt
And you’re going to hear them shout
Yeah I’m about to lose all doubt

So are you cool with it
Are you down
Are you cool with it
Will you frown

Will your frown leave this town
To paint another clown
Will your frown lose this town
Or are you cool with it

There’s another answer, understand
There’s another answer

But are you cool with it
‘Cause after all
If you’re cool with it
We’re standing tall

If you’re cool, we’re standing tall
If you’re not, it’s time to fall
‘Cause we’ll never fool them all
So are you cool with it?
Track Name: Give It Away If I Can
Bobby’s in the bathroom with his apricot scrub
I’m in my bedroom just debating what to dub
You give it away if you can
Give it away if you can

Bobby’s with a woman, got his radio low
Sounds like it’s Schumann, guess it’s time for me to go
And give it away if I can
Give it away if I can

Then I’m out on the block
Driving and I’m looking for a place to stand
Where my patron will walk
And let me give it away if I can
Give it away if I can

Jimmy’s is a sandwich shop I like to stand by
Every nickel out of there it’s got a greasy shine
I stow ‘em away in a can
Stow ‘em away in a can

Jimmy’s crowd is generous and just a little drunk
I give ‘em what they want and sell my tapes out of my trunk
I give ‘em whatever I can
Give ‘em whatever I can

Then I’m out on the block
Driving and I’m looking for a place to stand
Where my patron will walk
And let me give it away if I can
Give it away if I can

Andy’s is a pub that has these really big TVs
Any way you’re facing you can watch a game or three
I get ‘em away if I can
Yeah I draw ‘em away if I can

Andy’s is the kind of place I don’t go to myself
I never feel appreciated by their clientele
But I give it away if I can
Give it away if I can

Then I’m out on the block
Driving and I’m looking for a place to stand
Where my patron will walk
And let me give it away if I can
Give it away if I can
Track Name: Talkin' Construction Apocalypse Blues
I was sitting on the front porch, playing a song
Listening to the chainsaws and singing along
Saw animals acting crazy like there was something wrong
But I didn’t see nothing to be afraid of

Deer doing pirhouettes all around my car
Doves behaving more promiscuously than they usually are
A squirrel tried to hide inside my guitar
That’s when I forgot the song I was singing

I set my instrument down and looked him in the eye
Said “I don’t like rodents, mister, so you’d better fly”
And he did, and I didn’t notice the ashes falling from the sky
I felt so triumphant

Yeah, with a smile on my face I took a deep breath
Choked on black smoke and stumbled to the left
Which was a good thing ‘cause on the right, rumbling for my death
Was a bulldozer which crushed my guitar

There’s something in the air
Something singing “Fare thee well”
There’s something you should know
Something singing low out there

Now, running from this behemoth intent on my destruction
I began to change my opinion of construction
Granted I don’t own my house or the land it’s on
But headed for the trees and noticing they were all gone

It occured to me that now I had no place to hide
So as a last resort I spun around and headed back inside
Dozer hot on my heels, afraid for my hide
I was dismayed to find that my house was also gone

And in its place stood a Best Buy store
With construction beginning on two or three more
Bloodthirsty bulldozer rushed past me with a roar
To attack the original, ‘cause it had already folded

It was now that I realized what I’d previously missed
Strumming my guitar in bucolic bliss
I thought, “The End Times will surely look like this
And they’ll be sponsored by Caterpillar.”

There’s something in the air
Something singing “Fare thee well”
There’s something you should know
Something singing low out there
Track Name: When The Heat Comes Back On
Who could have predicted
The spell we’re going through now
I packed up all my winter clothes
But I need them in this house

The stars may be shining
Through the pouring rain
Yeah years ago I made a wish for love
Now with shaking hands I’m praying

Fix this bad connection
Don’t leave us in the cold
Or else my darling will be gone
When the heat comes back on

She’s the kind of person who waits
Until the curtains close
She even reads the credit lines
At the end of blurry videos

But lately when I hold her
She pulls away too soon
This house is getting colder
That’s why I’m praying to the moon

Fix this bad connection
Don’t leave us in the cold
Or else my darling will be gone
When the heat comes back on

The sun shines through the windows
And we can’t feel our toes
But I’d trade conversation for insulation
Or any sensation in my nose

Silence can be slippery
It’s worse than walking on black ice
You step on it, you stumble
You curse, and then you’ve fallen twice

But still you know it’s not your fault
Ah but does it matter now
Get back outside and pour some salt
And together make this vow

To fix this bad connection
You’re gonna need someone to hold
Or else my darling we’ll be gone
When the heat comes back on
Track Name: Play To Remember
I wouldn’t say that I drank too much last night
Because I quite enjoyed it
Up until the point when I couldn’t sing anymore
That’s the reason I avoid it

But that’s okay because I was alone
There was no one there to shame me
And what I muttered in the microphone
Was nothing more than a game we play to remember

Play to remember
A game we play
When we say goodbye
Goodnight

I didn’t notice when I went outside
If there was someone in the bushes
I didn’t think of it ‘til my back was turned
Drunk and open to their pushes

Oh I grabbed the things I needed then
And I sang though I couldn’t
If there had been a tape rolling
It would have been a show I wouldn’t play to remember

Play to remember
A game I play
When I say I’m not afraid
I’m not, I’m not afraid

And when I got to bed at last that night
The room was spinning
I leaned a while on the bathroom wall
‘Til I was sure who was winning

And when I slept, I dreamt of love
Of kisses from Iceland
When I recall what I was dreaming of
I was engaged as a stagehand in a play to remember

Play to remember
A play so pale
It was a veil
Over everything
